A practical guide

What to do when a porn urge feels strong.

An urge can feel urgent, but you do not need to treat it like an instruction. Try a few minutes of deliberate action.

First, make the next five minutes easier

Put the device down or lock the screen. Stand up if you have been sitting in the same place for a long time. Notice three ordinary details in the room. Then choose one small task you could begin immediately. The aim is to interrupt autopilot, not win a battle with your thoughts.

If you notice shame rising, name it gently. Feeling an urge does not tell you anything about your worth, and you do not have to argue with the urge to decide not to act on it.

Ask what the urge may be doing for you

Sometimes unwanted browsing begins after tension at work, loneliness, boredom or trouble sleeping. Sometimes it is simply a familiar routine. Make a quick note: where was I, what was I feeling, what time was it, what did I need? The answer might be incomplete, and that is okay.

Change the setting before debating with yourself

A physical change can be easier than a long internal argument. Move to a shared room, take a walk, charge the phone in another place or open a different task. If you want an online boundary, a DNS-based blocker may create useful friction but is not a guarantee that every route to content is closed.

Make a small replacement plan

Think of an alternative that fits the need. For tension, try five minutes outdoors. For boredom, start one specific project. For loneliness, consider contacting someone you trust. Make it realistic enough to do on an ordinary weekday.

Know when to ask for more help

If sexual thoughts or behaviors feel impossible to manage, cause marked distress or disrupt relationships, work or health, consider a health professional who understands compulsive sexual behavior. Talking to someone does not require accepting a particular label.

How long does an urge last?

Urge intensity varies from person to person and situation to situation. Focus on what you can do in the next few minutes, not a promised countdown.
